Expensive colt Beneteau has soared into second favouritism for the Blue Diamond Stakes after his impressive debut victory at Randwick on Australia Day.

Trainer Paul Messara has not committed to the Melbourne trip for next month's Group One but TAB Sportsbet immediately wound the colt into $8 from $15 with Secession retaining his place at the head of the market.

Crystal Lily and Innocent Gamble were at $9 and $15 respectively after winning the Blue Diamond Previews at Caulfield.

"I'll see how he pulls up out of today then decide whether we go for the Blue Diamond or keep him for a Golden Slipper preparation," Messara said following the colt's 2-3/4 length win in the Kurnell Maiden Plate (1000m).

Beneteau ($2 fav) defeated Georgette Silk ($6), with Dreamcoat ($41) a further neck away in third.

Apprentice Daniel Ganderton positioned Beneteau just behind the leader, Georgette Silk, before giving him a clear run in the straight. He surged away over the final 200m in a performance that thrilled his trainer.

"I thought it was outstanding for his first time at the races," Messara said.

"He has still got plenty of improvement and he even lost a shoe at the start, so he has run the race without one shoe. It was a great effort."

The Redoute's Choice colt is out of Slice Of Paradise, a full sister to multiple Group One winner Alinghi.

He is raced by a syndicate which includes Messara's father John who stands Redoute's Choice at his Arrowfield Stud.

Beneteau's victory was Ganderton's first for new master Messara since he transferred his indentures from Gai Waterhouse.

Ganderton said Beneteau was a special horse.

"He ticks every box and oozes class," Ganderton said.

"He's got a massive motor and a tremendous nature, we're just waiting for the penny to drop. If the penny drops, gee he will take some beating."

Messara rates Beneteau and Hiatus as his best two-year-olds.

Hiatus has been sent to the paddock for four weeks after going shinsore forcing his withdrawal from the Blue Diamond Preview but Messara hopes to still get him back in time for a Slipper tilt.

Also heading towards the Golden Slipper is the runner-up, Georgette Silk.

Trainer Clarry Conners has won four Golden Slippers and said Georgette Silk would head to the Widden Stakes on her way to a possible Slipper start.

"The trick is keeping them up," Conners said.

Hugh Bowman was aboard Georgette Silk and felt Beneteau was just too good on the day.

"I felt it was the best option to lead. She's a natural runner but has just run into a very good horse," he said.
