When it comes to surprises there are few races that compare with the Caulfield Guineas.

Controversial protests and a disqualification have dogged the Group One feature while it has also been renowned for some remarkable upsets.

None was bigger than Abaridy who became one the longest-priced winners in Australian history when he won the 1986 Guineas at $251 while other upsets in the last 20 years have included Procol Harum ($34), Centro ($26), In Top Swing ($19) and Econsul ($41).

On Saturday, Warrnambool's Jarrod McLean goes to Caulfield hoping to add to the list of shock winners with Testa Rossa colt Nicastro who is $41 with TAB Sportsbet.

McLean, 28, has never trained a Group One winner but went close when Cargo Cult finished second to Niconero in the 2008 Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.

"We went there that day thinking we were a good chance at 20-1 with Cargo Cult so fingers crossed we can go one better with this horse," McLean said.

While mindful of the huge task ahead of Nicastro, McLean was impressed with his last-start victory in the Lord Dudley Handicap (1440m) at Caulfield.

That day his time was a half a second faster than Zambari Handicap winner Gold Salute who, at $8, is one of the favourites for Saturday's Group One Toorak Handicap.

"I think he has earned his spot in the Guineas," McLean said.

"Obviously it is a very good field but he has been consistent.

"A couple of times he was only 1-1/2 or two lengths off Carrara and two lengths behind in the Guineas Prelude so I think he is a realistic top five chance."

Dwayne Dunn, who last year finished second to Whobegotyou on the Lee Freedman-trained Time Thief, will ride Nicastro after partnering him at his last two starts, including when fifth to Demerit in the Prelude.

McLean said barrier nine was awkward but he had faith in Dunn.

"I would have loved a bit better draw to get a soft run but Dwayne has ridden him well twice and he will sum things up," McLean said.

A Guineas victory with Nicastro would be particularly satisfying for part-owners John and Gillian Cappellin.

Together they owned Testa Rossa who was beaten in a photo-finish in the 1999 Guineas after a memorable home straight duel with arch rival Redoute's Choice.

But according to TAB Sportsbet the race is a benefit for Sydney-trained horses with Denman a firming favourite from $2.80 to $2.60 since the barrier draw ahead of Trusting at $4.50.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Manhattan Rain ($6.50) and So You Think ($8.50) are others in the market while Tony Vasil's Stutt Stakes winner Carrara is at $16.
