Talented colt Mazuka has been sent to the spelling paddock and will come back in the autumn as a gelding to be prepared for Group One racing.

Trainer Gerald Ryan believes the operation will give Mazuka the best chance to fulfil his potential.

Touted as a Golden Slipper hope early in his career, Mazuka failed to qualify for the big race and has recorded one win from eight starts.

That victory was at Warwick Farm in October after which he finished third and fifth prompting Ryan to end his campaign.

"He is having a few weeks off and he will be gelded before he comes back into the stable before Christmas," Ryan said.

"He is a horse who has so much ability but he has yet to do it on race day.

"I think he needs to be gelded because he is getting too heavy and is not concentrating on his races.

"Far from being coltish, he is too quiet and too relaxed.

"I really think he can be a force in the autumn and we will be looking at races like the Randwick Guineas with him."

Mazuka is by outstanding young sire Exceed And Excel, a dual Group One winner on the track, who was purchased by Darley for more than $20 million in 2004.

Ryan expects Mazuka to be racing in mid February starting with races like the Royal Sovereign Stakes with the Randwick Guineas (1600m) on March 14.

Mazuka ran third in the Kindergarten Stakes at his first start, a year after stablemate Warhead finished second in the same race won by eventual Slipper winner Forensics.

Like Mazuka, Warhead was mentioned as a Golden Slipper hope but finished out of the placings in the Todman Stakes.

That was the last time Warhead was seen in public until he won a barrier trial at Rosehill on Friday.

As he was being prepared for a 2007 spring campaign, Warhead was injured and underwent surgery for a chipped stifle.

All going well the four-year-old will resume his racing career in the next few weeks, possibly in the Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m) at Randwick on December 20.
