Successful owner Terry Henderson is hoping to get the Caulfield Cup winning feeling back with this year's contender Manighar, trained by Luca Cumani.

Henderson was a partner in the Lee Freedman-trained Doriemus who won the 1995 Caulfield-Melbourne Cup double and he is excited about what the next three weeks could hold.

A winner of six of 12 starts, Manighar is also in the Melbourne Cup and Henderson and his partner in OTI racing, Simon O'Donnell, could have as many as three runners in the big race at Flemington.

The Cumani-trained Bauer, who was beaten a nose when second to Viewed in the 2008 Melbourne Cup after winning the Geelong Cup, arrived at Werribee International Horse Centre on Saturday while another Werribee-based OTI import, Stanstill, now trained by Mick Kent, will try to force his way in to the Cup field via the Lexus Quality (2500m) on Derby Day.

OTI Racing also owns the Cumani-trained Becqu Adoree but she is only a long shot to run in either of the Cups.

Henderson said Manighar and Bauer, who has had two runs since coming back from a tendon injury, were in the spotlight as both were assured of Melbourne Cup starts.

He said both stayers had different qualities and it was hard to compare them.

"Manighar is a weight-for-age horse while Bauer is an out and out ring craft handicapper," Henderson said.

"Because Bauer has the runs on the board and was working so well back at Newmarket we are really excited about getting him back.

"(But) it would be beyond our expectations for him to come out and win the (Melbourne Cup) after two years off.

"Luca only decided he was a realistic chance to come across and be competitive about three weeks before he went in to quarantine."

Bauer was beaten 50 lengths at his first start since the 2008 Melbourne Cup when last of five runners over 2800 metres on September 2 but ran a much improved race when fourth, beaten just over six lengths, in a 2200-metre Group Three race at Newbury on September 17.

Damien Oliver will ride Manighar in the Caulfield Cup which will be the grey's fifth run since joining the Cumani stable.

Francesca Cumani said Manighar didn't travel well to Melbourne but had since recovered and was "bouncing, fresh and happy" again.

"Hopefully he can go for a big run in the Caulfield Cup," Cumani said.

"The distance should be right for him."

She says the stable is keen for Drunken Sailor to get a start in the Caulfield Cup but his chances are growing more and more unlikely.

The Geelong Cup is the alternative lead up race for the six-year-old who won the Listed March Stakes (2800m) at Goodwood on August 28.

Cumani said Manighar was possibly classier than Drunken Sailor who she described as "a tough handicapper" used to the jostling that comes with racing in big fields.

"He's a strong little fighter, more like the Bauer type, whereas Manighar, a last start second in a Group Two, is used to slightly smaller fields," Cumani said.
