Tony Gollan is hoping Lucky Toss can seize the opportunity to boost her stud value when she strives for her first Saturday city win at Doomben.

The Toowoomba trainer and the mare's owner, respected breeder Colin McAlpine, elected to run the five-year-old in the Queensland Bookmakers' Club Handicap (1640m) in preference to the Sita Environmental Handicap over the same distance.

"Colin and I spoke about which was the better race for her and we decided to go against the fillies and mares," Gollan said.

"We don't get many chances like this to run in a fillies and mares race worth $100,000.

"We think this race will suit better. She'll get further than 1600 metres but I suppose it is a bit of a concern second-up.

"Her last run might have taken some of the edge of her but I've deliberately kept her fresh."

Lucky Toss resumed from a lengthy spell with an eye-catching second to Fasliyev Dancer in a 1400-metre race at Eagle Farm on September 12.

"She was a victim of the pace last time," Gollan said.

"They went along hard in front and she had to come from last and did a good job for second but the tempo didn't suit her."

Gollan has no major plans in mind with Lucky Toss other than to win a Saturday metropolitan race to boost her value at stud.

Lucky Toss, who was originally trained by the late Bruce McLachlan, is from of one of Queensland's most famous breeding lines.

Her dam is Just For Luck who produced six winners from her nine named foals including Group Two winner Scenic Warrior, who won seven races during his career, and Stanzaic, a winner of 12 races.

Just For Luck is a daughter of prolific producer Tautina who had 18 foals including 1986 AJC Oaks winner Just Now and Bernalla.

Bernalla won 11 races including a Prime Minister's Cup at the Gold Coast and Brisbane Handicap at Eagle Farm during her career.

She went on to be an even better performer at stud throwing six winners including Startell, Telltina, Tellson and Tellem, all of whom raced with distinction in Brisbane.

Lucky Toss left the McLachlan stable as a maiden but managed to win three of her first four starts for Gollan.

A stone bruise and an infected eye forced Gollan to spell Lucky Toss while she was in form during the autumn but she showed with her first-up performance that she was coming to hand quickly.
