Trainer Danny O'Brien has queried the spring form of a number of Australian Guineas runners including stable hope Lucky Thunder who faces his biggest test in the Flemington feature.

O'Brien said that while Lucky Thunder was fitter for his first-up eighth to Fravashi in the Group Two Autumn Stakes (1400m) two weeks ago he faced a battle to make up the necessary ground to snatch a Group One victory on Saturday.

He said that the Autumn Stakes form which featured placegetters Fravashi, Nicconi and Heart Of Dreams appeared a better Guineas guide than the Carbine Club Stakes over the Guineas course last spring when Dr Doute's beat Lucky Thunder.

"It doesn't seem the spring form of him (Lucky Thunder) and Dr Doute's is quite as good as the autumn form of some of the others," O'Brien said.

"It seems like they both have to find a couple of lengths on what they did in the spring."

The timing of the Guineas could also work against Lucky Thunder who last spring improved with every run after winning his maiden at Geelong.

After being placed in the Carbine Club Stakes, Lucky Thunder finished his campaign with a luckless third to Fravashi's stablemate Caymans in the Group Two Sandown Guineas (1600m).

"He is a gross colt and always takes a run or two to get to his top," O'Brien said.

O'Brien has engaged apprentice Nicholas Hall for Lucky Thunder to replace the injured Chris Symons.

Lucky Thunder, part-owned by Tony Santic's Makybe Racing and Breeding operation, is $35 with TAB Sportsbet while Dr Doute's is $13.

Trustus, who finished fifth in the Carbine Club Stakes, is also long odds at $51.

Peter Snowden said that $3 Guineas favourite Fravashi had peaked for the Guineas.

"I am more than happy with him," Snowden said.

"He is as fit as I am going to get him."

The David Hayes-trained Nicconi ($6.50), Von Costa De Hero ($14) and Eagle Falls ($9) drew the outside three barriers but Hayes believes all three are capable of winning the Guineas.

He said Von Costa De Hero was unfairly maligned and could bounce back in the Guineas after he had worked on his barrier manners in the last two weeks.

Hayes said that the three-year-old, who finished fifth in the Autumn Stakes, would not wear a near-side blinker for the first time in five starts.

He said the colt was now jumping much quicker from the barriers.
