Lucky Leak confirmed Weetwood Handicap plans and a possible tilt at the Brisbane winter carnival with a narrow win at Doomben.

Lucky Leak made it a hat-trick of wins, all at Doomben, with a neck win over Zippy Lou in Saturday's Davking Handicap (1350m).

Third placegetter Essington put his hopes of heading to Sydney for the autumn in some doubt when finishing a further length away.

Trainer Pat Sexton, who once worked as a foreman for Gai Waterhouse, refuses to look any further than the Listed Weetwood Handicap (1300m) at Toowoomba on March 31.

The Weetwood is run on the cushion track and Sexton is a big fan of the artificial surface.

Lucky Leak's win gave Bobby El-Issa a winning treble and capped off a mixed week for the Gold Coast jockey who is involved in the Bold Glance running and handling inquiry.

Trainer Darryl Hansen wasn't too disappointed with Essington's performance, unlike jockey Chris Munce.

"I thought he raced great but he didn't have much luck when caught wide," Hansen said.

"I'll have another think about Sydney but it'll be up to his owner if he goes."

Hansen plans to send the former Victorian to Sydney for the Group Two Ajax Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on March 26 and the Group Three Doncaster Prelude (1600m) at Randwick on April 9.

Munce felt all was not well with Essington who was having his first start at Doomben.

"They went fairly quick early but I wasn't happy with him from the 700 metres," Munce said.

"He didn't track up into the race like I expected but it was his first go at Doomben."

Trainer John Petersen was pleased with Zippy Lou's brave effort and will now spell the four-year-old mare before looking for longer races towards the end of the upcoming winter carnival.

Earlier, former Victorian Bullet Proof also earned a shot at the Weetwood Handicap following his decisive victory in the JAE My Holdings Handicap (1200m).

Trainer Lindsay Gough has only trained the six-year-old for three starts for two wins and a close second to Brigadoon Jack at Doomben last month.

"He's got bad feet but he should have won all three races up here," Gough said.

"One came out and caused some trouble last time when he was beaten and he should have won.

"It was a 10 out of 10 ride from Damian Browne and he'll now go for the Weetwood."
