Gerald Ryan says Rothesay's three-quarter sister La Parisienne will be a better horse next preparation but believes she can still be competitive at her first city start at Randwick.

La Parisienne tackles Saturday's Sydney City Lexus Hcp (1400m), just two weeks after stakeswinner Rothesay was banned from racing in Australia because of a second bleeding attack.

Ryan rated Rothesay, winner of this year's Queensland Guineas and Lord Mayors Cup in Brisbane, potentially the best horse he's ever trained.

La Parisienne finished third on debut in a 1200m maiden at Gosford on October 17 and steps up in distance on the bigger Randwick track.

"She'll be better next preparation and she'll get over a bit of ground," Ryan said.

"She hasn't shown great natural gate speed in her trials and that's the way she raced on debut.

"But she got home well and the form out of the race is good."

The winner of that race, Tigress Lily, finished second at Canterbury at her next start and the runner-up Magical Anna was an easy winner at Hawkesbury on Thursday.

La Parisienne was also entered for a maiden at Newcastle on Saturday but has been scratched to compete at Randwick.

She is rated a $14 chance with TAB Sportsbet with the Peter Snowden-trained Caveat favourite at $2.70 just ahead of the Gai Waterhouse-trained Upon This Rock ($2.90).

Ryan has three other Randwick entrants but he said Keffiya would not be taking her place as she's run her last race after injuring a tendon on Thursday.

Dances On Waves is also a doubtful starter with Randwick rated a slow (6) on Friday, while last-start Hawkesbury winner Mr De Lago is engaged in the AJC National Event Caterer 2010 Handicap.

Dances On Waves, entered for the Order Your AJC Christmas Fare Handicap (1300m), races well first-up but needs a good surface to produce her best.

The mare is unplaced in four starts on tracks rated dead or worse.

"Her form on good tracks is three starts for two wins and a second, and the second was to Palacio De Cristal on debut," Ryan said.

The Rosehill trainer's main focus on Saturday, however, will be on Flemington where dual Group One winner Melito faces a mammoth task to keep her unbeaten second-up record intact in the Group One Patinack Farm Classic (1200m).

The race features the much-anticipated clash between outstanding sprinters Black Caviar and Hay List.

Melito was well beaten first-up when fifth in the Schweppes Stakes, won by Black Caviar, but her second-up form reads three starts for three wins.

"She's bright, she looks good and she's made good improvement since her first-up run," Ryan said.

"Flemington will suit her better than Moonee Valley, I'm not saying she can win the race but I think she'll run in the first four."
