Consistent galloper La Rocket capped off a long winter and spring campaign with a comfortable win in the inaugural Listed Spring Classic at Seymour.

Prepared by Dale Sutton, the gelding will be spelled after his victory in Wednesday's $100,000 feature at his first attempt at 2000m.

La Rocket was having his 10th run this preparation and has finished further back than fourth just once since he resumed in June.

In that time he has won two races, finished runner-up four times and third once.

Among his recent runs were a fourth to Rangirangdoo in the Group Two Crystal Mile (1600m) at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate day and a second to Right Fong in the Listed Johnnie Walker Stakes (1800m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day.

"He's been so honest," winning jockey Stephen Baster said.

"He's been up a long time. Dale's done a good job to keep him up.

"He'll go for a spell now that we know he can run the 2000 metres and hopefully he comes back better again.

"We had to bring him in a bit earlier to get his rating up because we didn't think he'd get a run in many of the better races.

"He came in and won early and he just kept going.

"He goes home and licks up every night, he's just a beauty.

"He's really relaxed. We took the (one-eyed) blinker off him today and he shied at the winning post (the first time) and went to pull up."

The five-year-old, by Rock Of Gibraltar from Group One Mackinnon Stakes winner La Bella Dama, is a half-brother to Macau Causeway who was placed at Group Three and Listed level as a two-year-old.

After La Rocket led early, Baster was content to let outsider Allanthus take up the running ahead of his mount who settled well in second position in the small field of seven.

La Rocket ($2.50 fav) went on to score by 1-3/4 lengths from Oronero ($12) with Davcon ($3.80) 2-1/2 lengths away third.
