Kerrin McEvoy's comeback from injury took another step forward on Tuesday, the same day he was announced as the likely rider of Godolphin's Campanologist in the Melbourne Cup.

McEvoy said his body felt good after riding in three barrier trials at Rosehill and he is looking forward to playing a role during the Melbourne Cup carnival.

The jockey hasn't ridden in a race since he fractured a vertebra in a fall at Gosford on June 23.

He spent several weeks in a body brace as part of his recovery and only returned to riding trackwork last Wednesday.

"It was good to get out there under race-like conditions again and it was definitely a step in the right direction," McEvoy said following Tuesday's barrier trials.

"The body is feeling good. Naturally after so long out the legs were a bit stiff but the back region has been fine.

"I'm continuing on with the rehab training I've been doing over the past six or seven weeks and I'm enjoying that."

The 29-year-old is hopeful of returning to race riding next Wednesday and is confident he will be right for the four-day Flemington carnival.

The Saeed bin Suroor-trained Holberg and Campanologist and the Mark Johnston-trained Eastern Aria, a recent addition to the Godolphin stable, arrived at the Werribee quarantine centre on Tuesday morning following a 28-hour trip from the UK.

Godolphin's travelling foreman Tommy Strang announced McEvoy as the likely Melbourne Cup rider of Campanologist provided he can prove his fitness, while Frankie Dettori will return Down Under to ride Holberg.

"I'm definitely planning on going down to Melbourne for the four days and riding a few of Darley's horses, and I'm confident of taking part on Campanologist in the Cup and giving it my best shot at giving Godolphin and Sheikh Mohammed their first win in the race," McEvoy said.

McEvoy won the Melbourne Cup in 2000 on the Mike Moroney-trained Brew.

He has placed on Godolphin horses Crime Scene (2nd, 2009) and Beekeeper (3rd, 2002), as well as winning the Caulfield Cup on All The Good in 2008.
