Underrated Toowoomba mare Malela will chase black type in the Brisbane and Recognition Handicaps next month if she can strike her best form at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
Trainer Kevin Kemp is eyeing the two Listed features over 1600 metres at Eagle Farm to boost Malela's stud value.
Kemp is also confident of a strong first-up showing from stablemate Dance Girl Dance who faces a stern test against Burdekin Blues in Saturday's Stanton Mienert Accountants Handicap (1000m).
Kemp took both mares to Sydney in the autumn and wasn't disappointed with their performances despite coming home empty-handed.
Malela finished fifth to Beaucoup in a 1500-metre restricted race at Rosehill on February 28 while Dance Girl Dance ran sixth to Neroli in the Group Three Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) the same day.
Malela produced an eye-catching performance when third to La Zeel over 1640 metres at Doomben two weeks ago while Dance Girl Dance will be making her comeback since failing in the Listed Glenlogan Park (1350m) at Doomben on May 16.
"Malela could measure up tomorrow if she gets some luck," Kemp said ahead of her assignment in the O'Donnell Griffin Hcp (1600m).
"It would be nice to get some black type with her so I'll run her in the Brisbane and Recognition Handicaps next month if she runs well.
"Her last run was very good when she got impeded badly in the run.
"She'll get back but there looks to be a bit of speed in the race."
Malela began her career with Newcastle trainer Kris Lees before being sacked and sent to Kemp to prepare at Toowoomba.
Dance Girl Dance was one of Queensland's most improved horses last campaign and has been in work for more than 10 weeks.
"She's drawn a tricky gate in barrier 10 but she's forward enough to run a good race," Kemp said.
"I could have given her a barrier trial over 900 metres but this is only 1000 metres so I chose to give her a race instead."
Kemp gave Dance Girl Dance two starts when she returned home Sydney and was far from disappointed despite her failing on both occasions.
"Her run in the Millie Fox in Sydney to finish sixth from a near outside gate was quite good and when she got home she had another bad alley when she ran fifth in the Silk Stocking," he said.
"Unfortunately she had to be ridden upside down when she got another bad draw in the Glenlogan.
"She got a bit of a buffeting coming around the home turn and weakened out of it."
Kemp, who has made only two trips to Sydney, hasn't ruled out returning to the harbour city with either mare if their form warrants it.
