Sydney's Con Karakatsanis wasn't doing any cartwheels but was still on cloud nine after News Alert continued the trainer's dream run in the Group Three Healy Stakes at Eagle Farm.

Karakatsanis and young jockey Tye Angland produced career highlights two weeks ago when they claimed their first Group One with Black Piranha in the $1 million Stradbroke Handicap.

Karakatsanis, who has been training for around 14 months, attempted a cartwheel and sidestepped well-wishers in the enclosure after Black Piranha's Stradbroke victory.

This time, Karakatsanis was still full of emotion but somewhat more subdued when News Alert downed Wasted Emotions by three-quarters of a length in the 1200-metre feature.

The Danny O'Brien-trained favourite Keano was a further half-length away third.

Four-year-old News Alert was coming off a third to Keano in the Listed Lightning Handicap (1000m) at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke day and Karakatsanis couldn't believe how he was overlooked as a serious contender on Saturday.

"I can't believe how they wrote him off before the race," Karakatsanis said.

"All credit to the horse. He fought off all challenges after being three wide early on.

"He'll go to Melbourne in the spring now but first I want to take him to Grafton for the Ramornie."

The Listed Ramornie Handicap (1200m) will be run on July 15.

News Alert was prepared by Hawkesbury trainer Garry White for most of his career until he arrived in Karakatsanis' stables at the start of his current campaign.

"I've only had him for four runs. He's had a few feet problems and used to hang out a lot but I've fixed those chinks in his armour," he said.

Karakatsanis was confident News Alert could turn the tables on Keano after he worked at the Gold Coast on Tuesday.

"He had a jumpout on Tuesday and his work was like that of a Group horse," he said.

Jockey Michael Cahill offered no excuses for Wasted Emotion's defeat after travelling perfectly throughout the run.

"He had a good run but was beaten by a better horse on the day," Cahill said.

Earlier, Goulburn trainer Danny Williams struck winter carnival gold for the first time since coming north with his entire stable of nine horses when Samtheflirt narrowly won the Hamilton Hotel Handicap (1400m).

Samtheflirt, who is part-owned by former Wallaby skipper Simon Poidevin, recorded his sixth win from 20 starts when he edged out Dalzar by a short half-head.

"This is the first time he's struck a decent track and I put a norton bit on him today because he tends to pull in his races," Williams said.

"He showed us a lot of promise early in his career until he fell over and hurt his back on a bitumen road and lost all form.

"We tried to sell him last year for $15,000 but we couldn't get a buyer and the best we got was $3,000 so the owners decided to retain him.

"I brought my entire stable of nine horses with us to Brisbane this year but this was our first winner in the city."
