Winning continues to be a habit for trainer Con Karakatsanis with Jet Hawk continuing the momentum at Canterbury.

Karakatsanis celebrated a milestone in his short career when Black Piranha won Saturday's Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm.

The trainer is still in Queensland where News Alert will run on Saturday week with his uncle John on hand to represent the stable at Canterbury.

"Con stayed up there because he rides his horses in their work," Karakatsanis said.

"He will be back later this week."

Although most winners had come down the centre of the track, apprentice Tommy Berry elected to take Jet Hawk along the rail in the final stages of the Freeways Friday Lunch Show Handicap (1580m).

It proved an intelligent move with Jet Hawk stretching out to put 1-1/2 lengths on Step Forward on the line.

Earlier Bart Cummings produced a potential star in two-year-old debutant Latin News who led all the way to win the Freeway Hotel Artarmon Plate (1250m).

By leading sire Hussonet, Latin News was the heavily supported $1.80 favourite and lived up to his billing to beat Dusty Gold by 3-3/4 lengths.

"It's the owner Michael O'Keeffe's birthday so that's a good present for him," Cummings said.

"The horse relaxed nicely and finished it off well.

"He's always been a good sort and his trials leading into this have been very good.

"I think he has a future.

"He cost $180,000 which is pretty cheap and even cheaper now."

Corey Brown rode Latin News to move within one of Hugh Bowman in their battle for premiership honours.

But as has happened at the past couple of meetings, Bowman hit back immediately with a winning double and stretched his lead to three.

Bowman rode the Joe Pride-trained Sway To Go to an all-the-way win over Diktat in the Freeway Republic Beer Plate (1100m) and then guided south coast galloper Beau Secret to victory in the Ruse Tavern Handicap (1100m).

The Robert Price-trained Beau Secret was the subject of a concerted betting move, crunched from $5.50 to $4.40.

At his previous start, Beau Secret finished second to Orpen Rose at Canterbury on May 27.

That form stood up with Orpen Rose repeating the feat in Wednesday's Freeway's Great Steaks Handicap (1200m) with apprentice Bethany Honeysett aboard again.
