Former New Zealander Herculian Prince underlined his staying credentials when he scored his first black type victory in the Listed Neville Sellwood Stakes at Canterbury.

Herculian Prince ($4.60) sat just off the leaders but applied the pressure from the 600m mark and raced away in the straight to defeat the fast-finishing Tobique ($4.20 fav) by 1-1/4 lengths with Albertinelli ($5) a further 1-1/2 lengths back in third.

It was the four-year-old Gai Waterhouse-trained gelding's third straight win this preparation after midweek victories at Canterbury and Warwick Farm leading into the 1900m Easter Monday feature.

He has now won three from four since joining the Waterhouse camp from New Zealand last year and next stop is the Listed JRA Plate (2000m) at Randwick on April 17.

The Group One Doomben Cup (2000m) in Brisbane during the winter carnival is also an option but the stable believes Herculian Prince will be an even better galloper in the spring.

"He was beautifully rated there by (apprentice) Daniel (Ganderton), he was happy to sit outside the leader, he made his move at the 600 metre mark and never looked like he was going to get beaten," stable representative Tania Rouse said.

"Gai has been quietly confident all weekend that he would win and she was proven right again.

"He's a beautiful horse, he does everything right in his races and gives his all when the jockey asks him for an effort."

Despite taking out the feature race, Ganderton's day was soured when stewards later adjourned an inquiry into the young rider's conduct towards the Sydney Turf Club's clerk of the scales prior to the Neville Sellwood Stakes.

The matter will be heard on Thursday when Ganderton's master Paul Messara is available to attend.

Trainer Allan Denham was pleased with the performance of Tobique and was hopeful of gaining a start in the Group One Doncaster Mile on Saturday week.

"He raced well, if he gets into the Doncaster he'll go there," Denham said.

"He's down on 51kg though, but that's where I'm heading if he gets in."

Herculian Prince's win was the middle leg of a treble for Waterhouse who also celebrated victories with Princess Quality and Tinjirarni.

Meanwhile, talented sprinter Nightofthegeneral is likely to head to the paddock after winning the Canterbury Bankstown Express Handicap (1100m).

Trainer Ross Simpson, who prepares the sprinter in partnership with Tracey Barnes, said Nightofthegeneral would be set for the June Stakes at Randwick and perhaps the Ramornie Handicap at Grafton during the winter months.
