Helmet failed to pass a crucial barrier trial test at Randwick on Friday, leaving his possible participation in Saturday week's Golden Slipper in doubt.

The talented colt was ordered to trial to stewards' satisfaction after he played up in the barriers and was scratched from the Group Two Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) at Flemington earlier this month.

Trainer Peter Snowden was using Friday's barrier trial to determine whether Helmet ran in the Golden Slipper or Baillieu Handicap at Rosehill next weekend.

However, Helmet played up in the barriers again and was scratched from his heat meaning he wasn't cleared to return to the races.

There are another set of trials at Warwick Farm on Monday should Snowden elect to head there, with the final acceptances for the $3.5 million Golden Slipper to be taken the following day.

"He reared in the barriers and got cast for a period of time," deputy chairman of stewards Greg Rudolph said.

"He was backed out of the barrier along with a number of other horses and the starter Billy Dale was of the opinion that he had been up (cast) for too long, I agreed with him, and the horse was withdrawn from the trial.

"Peter Snowden was told the horse would have to trial again, he wasn't able to be passed."

Rudolph said if Snowden applied to trial Helmet on Monday it would be granted.

Golden Slipper-bound Masthead won his 740m trial by two lengths in his first Sydney appearance.

The Lee Freedman-trained colt was third to Sepoy in the Group One Blue Diamond and then fourth in the Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) in Melbourne.

Gerald Ryan was also very pleased with Saramenha and Hot Snitzel who were in the same 1050m heat and finished first and second respectively.

Saramenha will now go straight into the Golden Slipper and so will Hot Snitzel providing he makes the final field.

Hot Snitzel is 20th in the order of entry but there are several horses above him not expected to be paid upfor next week.

Connections opted to bypass Saturday's Pago Pago Stakes and take the chance his $67,000 prizemoney would be enough to make the field.
