Trainer Rob Heathcote is a realist and knows his recent Group Two winner Buffering can't beat Black Caviar in the BTC Cup at Doomben.

If there was any doubt from Heathcote it was quickly laid to rest after watching Black Caviar have a "familiarisation" gallop at Doomben on Tuesday.

The mare's trainer Peter Moody gave Black Caviar a gallop at Doomben after walking the giant mare across the road from his stabling block at Eagle Farm.

"If that was a familiarisation gallop then I'm in serious trouble," Heathcote said.

"If she runs up to her best I can't beat her.

"I'll be happy to get within six lengths of her."

Despite the hype surrounding the world's highest rated sprinter, Heathcote refuses to throw in the towel in his bid to claim the first Group One of his career on Saturday.

Buffering gave Heathcote two of his four Group Two victories when the three-year-old made a stunning comeback to win the Victory Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm on April 30.

"I made no secret Buffering went into the Victory Stakes off a setback when he hurt his foot," Heathcote said.

"It was a major hiccup and he went into that race only 70 to 80 per cent fit.

"He's taken a lot of improvement since then but it's scary what Pete (Moody) did on Tuesday with his mare."

Heathcote has a strong winter carnival team this winter but hopes his first major will come before Buffering steps into the ring for the Group One Stradbroke handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 11.

"The winner of the Victory Stakes qualifies for an automatic start in the Stradbroke so he's heading that way," Heathcote said.

Moody raised the stakes in the battle of tactics over who would be the likely leader in the BTC Cup by refusing to rule out Black Caviar taking up the front runner's role.

However, Heathcote isn't falling for Moody's mind games.

"I make it clear Buffering is going to lead and if anything wants to takes him on so be it," he said.
