The Hawkes training partnership knows that having Darren Beadman in the saddle can be the difference between winning and losing and is banking on the champion jockey weaving his magic on Mentality at Rosehill on Saturday.

Beadman has won the Group One George Ryder Stakes (1500m) three times, the first in 1995 on March Hare for trainer John Morish before claiming two aboard Lonhro in 2003 and 2004 for then Crown Lodge trainer John Hawkes.

The bulk of Mentality's seven victories have come with Beadman in the saddle with two of them at the top level in the 2006 Champagne Stakes and the Randwick Guineas a year later.

Michael Hawkes, who is part of the training partnership with his brother Wayne and father John, believes in the "Beadman factor" and says it will be required on the weekend with Sydney's wet weather.

"He has performed well on slow to heavy tracks but he's never won on them, so it is a concern," Hawkes said.

"But we know, and I suppose Dad knows better than most, that there is a Beadman factor and there's no question this horse runs for him."

Mentality comes into the race after running seventh to All Silent in the Group Two Canterbury Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill on March 21.

"He jumped from the widest alley (nine) and never really got into it until late and he really sprouted wings in the closing stages, so it was very pleasing," Hawkes said.

"The distance suits, he's on his home track and the horse is absolutely spot-on and we couldn't think of better hands to have the horse in than Darren's."

Rosehill track manager Lindsay Murphy said the surface had been hit with 42 millimetres of rain in the past couple of days and said the best case scenario was for the track to be in the slow range.

Beadman will also partner Fiumicino for the Hawkes team in the Group One $2.25 million BMW (2400m).

Fiumicino scored his biggest win with Beadman aboard when they claimed the 2007 AJC Australian Derby (2400m) on a heavy Randwick track.

He ran seventh to Theseo last start in the Group One Ranvet Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on March 21.

"He's going to need a bit of luck to win this, hopefully Darren can provide the polish again," Hawkes said.
