The old firm of jockey Jay Ford and champion Takeover Target will be reunited in a track gallop at Morphettville on Thursday ahead of Saturday's Group One The Goodwood.

Although he is excited, Ford says he isn't sure if Saturday's 1200-metre race will be the last time he rides the ageless warrior.

Trainer Joe Janiak's plans for Takeover Target include a defence of the KrisFlyer Sprint in Singapore next month before tackling another Royal Ascot campaign.

"I haven't got a clue ... I just want to concentrate on Saturday," Ford said.

Janiak shocked the racing world when he replaced Ford with Nash Rawiller who rode the international sprint king to a commanding victory in the Group One TJ Smith Stakes at Randwick on April 18.

It was just the second time in nine-year-old Takeover Target's 38-start career that Ford has not ridden him and the first time the champion has returned to the winner's enclosure without Ford on his back.

TAB Sportsbet has Takeover Target at $1.60 for the Goodwood but Ford is taking nothing for granted.

"I suppose it's not the first time that he's gone into a race where on paper he is the one to beat," Ford said.

"But you can never go into any sort of Group One thinking that you are just going to turn up and win.

"He'll improve on that first-up run and the strength of his win the other day gives me confidence he will perform well."

Takeover Target has drawn barrier eight of 12.

"Barriers aren't of a concern for him because he's got good gate speed and makes his own luck," Ford said.
