Lee Freedman has a problem with First Command other trainers would love to have. His opposition doesn't go fast enough.

The four-year-old made it seven wins from nine starts in Saturday's Group Two Perri Cutten Sprint (1100m) at Caulfield but Freedman said the best was still ahead of the gelding.

Ridden by Dwayne Dunn, First Command shared the early lead with Happy Glen before being restrained to second and responding in the home straight to score a three-quarter length win over Turffontein. Happy Glen held on for third.

"It didn't really suit me for him to race that way today," Freedman said.

"Strangely enough this horse needs to get into a race where they run along quicker.

"He sort of over-raced most of the race but he was still too good but I would love to run him back off the speed."

Freedman said Flemington's Group One Lightning Stakes (1000m) in the autumn was the sort of race that First Command could excel in.

"I would love to get him in the Lightning where there is a ton of speed in the race he can back off them a bit.

"I think you would see an exceptional horse."

First Command rebounded on Saturday after suffering only his second defeat last start when All Silent beat him in a photo finish to the Group Two Gilgai Stakes (1200m) Flemington on October 3.

His next target is at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup carnival, possibly the Group Two Salinger Stakes (1200m) on Derby Day with the Group One Patinack Farm Classic (1200m) on November 7 another option.

"He got the job done today and we head to Flemington with some confidence now," Freedman said.
