Fine Drop has the chance to press his claims for a tilt at some major spring assignments at Randwick on Wednesday.

The blinkers are off the Robert Price-trained General Nediym gelding for the Shamekha Handicap (1550m) and the NSW south coast horseman is expecting the gear change to make a big difference.

Fine Drop pulled hard last start at Kembla Grange in a 1500-metre maiden on August 22 when fourth to Chateau Le Tour.

"Second-up over that distance with the blinkers on was just a bit too much for him to cope with," Price said.

"I probably should have taken them (blinkers) off because he overraced badly, he's better than that.

"He was pretty close to the speed but will be ridden quieter on Wednesday with no blinkers and hopefully we'll see him finish off."

Fine Drop jumps from barrier three and will be ridden by Tye Angland in a race which includes city winners Triple Elegance, Heraklion, Cleanup and Artistic Rock.

"It's a pretty hard race but in saying that I think he goes good enough to measure up in this," Price said.

Price has Fine Drop nominated for the Group One Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on October 3.

"He'd really have to perform on Wednesday to even warrant thinking about a race like that," he said.

"He doesn't have to be winning but he has to be hitting the line strongly.

"Races like the Gloaming would also be on the cards if he performs well."

Price believes the three-year-old will thrive over longer distances.

"He's going to get a trip, all he wanted to do last prep was relax," Price said.

Fine Drop was eighth to Manhattan Rain in the Group Three Skyline Stakes (1200m) in March before having a 20-week spell.

He was a first-up third to Lonhro four-year-old Sainthood in a 1300-metre race at Kembla on August 1.

"He raced pretty solid as a two-year-old because he's got that natural ability," Price said.

"He's not a really big, robust horse and he is not a great doer in the stable, he's only a picky eater and still has some maturing to do."

Fine Drop has been placed twice from five starts and is out of the Red Ransom mare Fine Red.

The Group Three Gloaming Stakes (1800m) is at Rosehill on September 19.
