Jockey Patrick Ferris has been placed back into an induced coma in Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital, with doctors to attempt to bring him out of the coma in another couple of days.

Ferris fell from his mount Neigh Then in the second race at Muswellbrook on June 28 and was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital where he underwent an operation that night to relieve pressure on his brain.

Doctors began reducing the jockey's medication on Saturday to try to bring him out of the induced coma but a statement from Racing NSW on their website on Tuesday said the 32-year-old had been placed back into the induced state for the time being.

"The doctors have placed Patrick back into an induced coma," Racing NSW's jockey safety officer Maurice Logue said.

"They will attempt to wake him again in a couple of days. The doctors explained that this is normal practice."
