Shane Dye kicked off his six-month contract in Mauritius with a win in the feature race on the season's opening day - riding three kilos overweight.

The excess baggage made little difference to favourite, Short Corner, in the Centenary Souvenir Trophy as he recorded his fifth consecutive victory.

Short Corner is prepared by Gilbert Rousset who Dye is contracted to in Mauritius.

Dye, 42, also rode a second for Rousset on Romp In Forum in the 1400m Le Week-End Challenge Cup.

One of Australia's most successful riders with four Golden Slippers, a Cox Plate and a Melbourne Cup on his CV, Dye left for the racing outpost after complaining he couldn't get a ride in Sydney.

Dye was given permission to ride Short Corner, allocated 50.5kg at 53kg but turned up half a kilo heavier.

Rousset told the Mauritius Turf Club, it would take Dye another two or three weeks to get down to the 52.5 he is expected to ride at in the French colony.
