Aquanita trainer Heath Conners says he wouldn't change a thing with Davcon after months of planning to win Saturday's Winter Championship Final at Flemington.

Conners said even the barrier draw has worked out ideally for the gelding who has won two of his four starts this campaign, including a championship heat over 1500m when second-up at Cranbourne at the end of May.

Jockey Michael Rodd was so impressed with the 3-1/4 length win over Sensational Toy that he immediately committed to the four-year-old for the rest of his campaign and won on him again at Moonee Valley last start.

Conners decided last summer that the Winter Championship (1600m) was the right race for the gelding and spelled him after he finished second to Just Look in the Listed Lord Stakes (1700m) at Caulfield on Boxing Day.

"This whole campaign was about the Winter Championship and, touch wood, everything has gone to plan," Conners said.

"Obviously it is a harder race with a few better horses than he has been meeting this campaign but he's a trier which is the biggest thing and he is a real chance.

"He's drawn near the middle of the field in barrier 12 which is ideal for him as he will settle worse than midfield.

"His best runs are when you ride him back and it should be a fast-run race which will suit him."

Conners is so confident in Davcon's ability that he is already making spring plans for him.

He said he would have a two-week break after Saturday and then get ready for the country Cups.

"He's already been to 2000 metres and that hasn't worried him and he is such a relaxed horse with his turn of foot he could get 2400 metres," Conners said.

While Conners was relishing his good run with Davcon, trainer Don Campbell was lamenting the scratching of his stable star O'Reilly's Clock after he walked from his box on Friday morning with a bruised foot.

O'Reilly's Clock was equal top qualifier with Delayedreaction of the Winter Championship final acceptances and would have been the only runner from last year's race going around in the final on Saturday.

"It's only a minor bruise but it is disappointing as we had planned this race for him 12 months ago," Campbell said.

Davcon heads the TAB Sportsbet market at $4.50 and would give Rodd his second Winter Championship in a row after he scored on Sea Battle last year.

Of the other heat winners, Gold Salute is the most fancied at $10 ahead of The Fonz ($14) with Sand Sweeper and Monsieur Feraud at $17.
