Promising galloper Under The Eiffel made a triumphant return to racing at Sandown on Wednesday after suffering a broken shoulder as a two-year-old.

The Tony Vasil-trained three-year-old was having his first start for 13 months in the New Litho Hcp (1200m) and was racing for the first time as a gelding.

"He broke his shoulder in the paddock when he was in pre-training at Kelvin Bourke's and he was gelded and had a long spell," managing owner Rod Lyons said.

"He was as green as grass last time, he was running all over the pace."

Ridden by Jamie Mott, Under the Eiffel was backed from $7 to start at $5 and finished powerfully from well back to win running away by 1-1/2 lengths from Broadcast ($4.20 fav) with Speediness ($6) three-quarters of a length away third.

"It was terrific to see those colours salute again," Lyons, who was also involved with multiple Group-winning Vasil-trained gallopers Super Elegant and Zazzman, said.

"He's always shown a bit and Tony's always had a big opinion of him.

"He (Vasil) came back from the Gold Coast to ride him in work the other week and he told us to make sure we got here today.

"I flew in this morning from Europe so I was pretty happy to get here and watch it."

The Mossman gelding, who cost $50,000 as a yearling, made it successive wins from just three starts having won a two-year-old maiden at Seymour at his previous outing in December 2009.

He was beaten a short half-head when runner-up on debut in a two-year-old maiden at Bendigo also in December 2009.

"Tony bought him on speck and when he does that you want to make sure you get a share in them," Lyons said.

"I've had horses with Tony for 20 years. He only had three horses when I first met him.

"We had Super Elegant and Zazzman. He's a good trainer."

Dual Group One-winning sprinter Super Elegant won 19 races and more than $2 million in prizemoney while Zazzman won eight races and $879,900 and finished third to Makybe Diva in the 2004 Melbourne Cup.

Lyons said Vasil was currently on his way back from the Gold Coast and he would leave it to the trainer to place Under The Eiffel in the coming weeks.

The horse was not nominated for the Group One Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on March 5.

Under The Eiffel is out of the Danehill mare Spire who won three races from 1800m to 2400m and was runner-up in the 2004 Listed Memorial Cup (2400m) at Randwick.
