Jockey Patrick Ferris remained in a coma on Sunday - almost a week after he was involved in a race fall.

"I've been in touch with his family and Patrick is still in a coma," Racing NSW jockey safety officer Maurice Logue said.

Logue said doctors had reduced Ferris's medication on Saturday to bring him out of an induced coma but they were uncertain about a possible timeframe.

"I've been told it took Lachlan Fyfe 10 days to come out of an induced coma after his fall so there is nothing unusual about Patrick's case," he said.

Ferris was taken to Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital after he suffered head injuries in a fall at Muswellbrook races last Monday.

He had emergency surgery to relieve pressure on his brain and he is on a life support system.

"When Patrick wakes up the doctors will be able to properly assess his condition from there," Logue said.
