Popular Victorian jockey Danny Brereton was due to have scans on his lower back on Sunday to determine the extent of injuries he suffered in a fall at Moonee Valley.

Brereton suffered severe concussion and a suspected broken vertebra after his mount Marquee Player fell at the 450 metres and rolled over the top of him on Saturday.

Australian Jockeys Association executive Des O'Keeffe said Brereton suffered multiple injuries and had been transferred from Royal Melbourne Hospital to the Austin Hospital on overnight.

It is feared Brereton will need surgery on a vertebra but O'Keeffe said a "more definite prognosis" would be made by doctors after the scans were taken on Sunday.

Brereton underwent X-rays, head and back scans and an MRI at the Royal Melbourne hospital on Saturday night.

Fellow jockey Nick Hall, who was dislodged from his mount Hollowlea in the backwash of the fall, was also taken by ambulance to Royal Melbourne but was later discharged.

"He'll be fine," O'Keeffe said.

Evidence was taken from Mark Zahra (Bullbars), James Winks (Broadcast), Brent Stanley (Epic Dragon) and Craig Williams (Rekindled Interest) at the opening of an inquiry into the incident.

Chief steward Terry Bailey said the inquiry would be reconvened when Brereton and Hall were able to give evidence.

Brereton's major wins include the 1997 Blue Diamond Stakes on Knowledge and the QTC Sires Produce and Castlemaine Classic on Al Mansour.
