Lightly raced three-year-old Threebytwo may target next month's Group Three Tasmanian Derby after a stylish win at Sandown.

Trainer Greg Eurell said the Hobart classic on February 8 was among the options for the gelding who has now won his past two starts.

Eurell said Threebytwo's win at Kyneton was a revelation on how best to ride the chestnut son of American shuttle stallion Southern Image who stormed to victory after dropping back to last from a wide barrier.

Easy in betting from $10 to $14, he was again with the backmarkers in Monday's Ricoh Handicap (1600m) and finished strongly to score by neck from Sickle ($4.60) and favourite Population ($3.00).

"It was only by a stroke of luck we changed tactics on him after he drew so poorly at Kyneton," Eurell said.

"It worked to our favour and made a big difference."

Threebytwo has raced only four times but Eurell believes that the Tasmanian Derby (2200m) is a suitable race for him.

"He proved to us today that we can look for something a little bit stronger for him," Eurell said.

"He took a little while to get there but he got there and the win opens it up a little bit for us now.

"He is relaxing very, very well and way he is finishing off he is certainly in contention for something that (Derby)."
