A favourable barrier has Sheikh Mohammed's Darley team poised to capture the first Group One race of the season with Denman in Saturday's Golden Rose.

Denman came up with gate four in the 15-horse field for the $1 million Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill, supporting his favouritism ahead of Saturday's weight-for-age winner Trusting.

TAB Sportsbet's first markets on Tuesday had Denman at $2.70 with Trusting $4.60 and Phelan Ready $6.50.

Trusting is raced by Nathan Tinkler's Patinack Farm operation and forced his way into the field via the Warwick Stakes at Randwick after a luckless seventh to Denman in the Run To The Rose a week earlier.

However, Denman had to carry 4-1/2 kilograms more than his rival that day and punters have rallied to the colt who competes at set weights this weekend.

"The barrier (11) hasn't helped Trusting but the weight is the big factor with punters," TAB Sportsbet's Glenn Munsie said.

"Denman is the one they want and he came in to $2.60 with money also coming for The Mikado who was snapped up at $26 and immediately firmed to $17.

"He had even less luck than Trusting in the Run To The Rose."

Trainer Peter Snowden was more than happy with Denman's barrier.

"I'm very happy with the draw," Snowden said.

"Everything's going good with the horse and hearing that he drew four was great news."

Denman finished third on debut at Flemington in December but has remained unbeaten in four starts this campaign, winning three in Victoria before his dominant win over More Than Great in the Run To The Rose.

More Than Great will not run in the Golden Rose but third-placed Bombay Sling and The Mikado, who finished fourth, will both be there.

Chris Waller will have two runners - Shellscrape (barrier 8) and Stryker (2).

Shellscrape won the San Domenico Stakes on August 8 before being run down by the Snowden-trained Rarefied in Saturday's Up And Coming Stakes.

"I would have preferred seven for Shellscrape and it could have been worse," Waller said.

"It's one of those gates, it's not a problem for him and no concern for us."

"It's a fantastic draw for Stryker."

Trusting is trained by Jason Coyle at Warwick Farm while Patinack's other runner, Porsched, is prepared in Melbourne by Mick Price.

Porsched came up with the "visitor's draw" of 15 with fellow Victorian, Golden Slipper runner-up Headway, faring little better in 14.

Premier Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse has one of the outsiders in the field in $41 chance Viking Legend who will jump from gate one.

The ever-confident Waterhouse believes he can make a big improvement on his fifth in the Run To The Rose where he drew wide.

"He's absolutely spot-on," she said.

"He won't have to do any work from that alley, not like the other day.

"He can just jump and be there on Saturday."
