Trainer Greg Hickman is convinced there is only one horse for Definite Choice to beat in Wednesday's Spring Stakes at Newcastle.

He believes the field in the Group Three race over 1600 metres is vastly inferior to the one the colt faced last start.

The Warwick Farm horseman says Hus Der Lieften is the horse standing in the way of Definite Choice winning the race.

Definite Choice comes into the Spring Stakes after beating one runner home in the Listed Ming Dynasty (1400m) at Randwick on September 5.

More Than Great defeated So You Think by a nose while Definite Choice was nearly six lengths from the winner.

The Bart Cummings-trained So You Think was subsequently installed the $4.20 favourite for the Group One Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) on October 3.

"His (Definite Choice) last run was better than what it might first look," Hickman said.

"There'll be a heap of form coming out of that race. He only beat one home but they finished the race off pretty fast.

"This field is not the same class of field he went up against the other day. You take out Hus Der Lieften and it's a class two."

Definite Choice has drawn barrier 10 of 14 in the Spring Stakes continuing his bad luck with gates.

In the Ming Dynasty he jumped from seven of nine and was forced to settle at the back of the field.

Prior to that at Hawkesbury last month he drew barrier eight of nine and worked hard early before going on to run a short head second to Dictatorial over 1400 metres.

"Hopefully they won't go as hard in the mile race and we can get there a bit easier," Hickman said.

"The horse has worked very well since the other day and it's all going to come down to luck."

The Gerald Ryan-trained Hus Der Lieften won The Rosebud (1200m) on August 1 and comes into the race after a fourth to Denman in the $1 million Golden Rose.

Hus Der Lieften is rated a $9 chance for the Spring Champion Stakes.

Hickman plans to run Definite Choice in the Spring Champion Stakes and TAB Sportsbet has the colt at $21.

"He'll run in this race and then we might go in the Dulcify and then probably back up in the Spring Champion Stakes," Hickman said.

"He won't go to Melbourne for the Caulfield Guineas."

The Listed Dulcify (1800m) is at Randwick on September 26.

In-form stablemate Allaboutus has pleased Hickman in her build-up to Thursday's Listed Tibbie Stakes (1400m) at Newcastle.

The six-year-old scored a slashing 2-3/4 length win over Mossurmi in a 1800 metre race at Randwick on July 25.

"She's won first-up over 1250 metres and I'm pleased with her going into it," Hickman said.
