Veteran galloper Danzylum has won his second Chester Manifold Stakes at Flemington while the partner of one of his owners was trying to save 70 horses in the flooded town of Rochester.

Janet Gaist was told three hours before the Manifold that Rochester had been evacuated after the Campaspe River broke its banks while her partner Peter Harris battled to move stallions, mares, yearlings and foals to higher ground at Manner Lodge Thoroughbreds Farm, 40 minutes north of Bendigo.

Gaist said Manner Lodge had been cut off by floodwaters since Friday and that she feared for the safety of Harris and the horses.

"We are stressing," Gaist said. "Hopefully Peter is not drowning."

Manner Lodge's stallions include Delzao, who was placed in the 2004 Australian Cup and AJC Australian Derby and fifth in the Caulfield Cup.

Regal Shot, Critical List and Muqbil are other sires on the property.

Gaist said there were 20 foals in danger while the yearlings were being prepared for the Melbourne and Adelaide sales.

She said other studs had rung offering assistance as the floodwaters rose.

"They are just legends," Gaist said.

"Rochester (with 2500 people) is just totally gone, the whole town, and floodwaters won't hit its peak until eight o'clock tonight.

"The government has been fantastic and the emergency workers have been unbelievable.

"Danzylum has done it for Rochester."

Trained by Robbie Griffiths and ridden by Luke Currie, Danzylum won the Manifold with the same frontrunning tactics as a year ago.

He scored by two lengths from Offenders with perennial placegetter Chasm a head back third.

Stable foreman Don Healy said the Manifold had been the campaign goal for the seven-year-old who has now won 12 of his 60 starts and took his earnings to nearly $600,000.

"He is just very strong, very honest and has got the temperament to go with it," Healy said.

"Once he gets in front, and he's rated and can roll along at his speed, they just can't get past him."

Healy said Danzylum scored an unexpected win four starts ago at Caulfield and had trained on superbly.

Danzylum will try to avenge his second in last year's Listed John Dillon Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Australia Day.
