Bart Cummings provided Luke Nolen with his first Group One win in 2006 and the in-form rider is hopeful he can help the "Cups King" land his first Sydney Cup since 1984 at Randwick on Saturday.

Nolen will partner Cup favourite Precedence, one of two runners for Cummings in the 3200m Group One staying test.

Cummings has three Sydney Cups to go with his 12 Melbourne Cups, but Trissaro's victory 26 years ago is the legendary trainer's most recent win in the race.

Nolen is chasing his first Sydney Cup victory.

"Bart probably does need his spirits lifted after a difficult fortnight and he was there for me from the start - I rode my first Group One winner for him (on Wonderful World)," Nolen said.

"He's always got good runners, whether it be in the spring or autumn, and he's always thrown me a bone. It would be very good if I could win the Sydney Cup for him."

Cummings has spent this week in St Vincent's Private Hospital under observation after battling with influenza for the past two weeks.

Precedence is favourite for the Cup on the back of a promising campaign that has so far netted three victories including the Listed Manion Cup (2400m) at Rosehill on March 27.

However, his final run prior to the Cup was a 4-1/4-length fifth in the Group Two Chairman's Handicap (2600m) at Randwick as the $2.25 favourite.

"His Sydney Cup preparation was all going very well before his last start, but he probably had a couple of things against him that day," Nolen said.

"He pulled too hard in a slowly-run race and as a result of his pulling he ended up back on the inside of them which worked against him.

"You've probably got to overlook that."

Nolen has had a season to remember so far with six major victories to sit one behind Nash Rawiller as the nation's leading Group One rider.

Cummings has also won six Group Ones to sit joint-first with Peter Moody as the leading Group One trainer.

Nolen rode Precedence twice last preparation and has been with him throughout this campaign and knows the gelding is a serious horse in the making.

But he said the son of Zabeel just needed to put it all together, like he did at Flemington three starts back when he won a 2000m Open Handicap by seven lengths.

"He has great scope to be further improved after this preparation, and Bart would probably embark on a Melbourne Cup preparation with him if he looks like staying tomorrow," Nolen said.

In an attempt to turn around the Chairman's disappointment, Precedence will have a gear change on Saturday with winkers replacing blinkers in an attempt to get him to settle better.

"If he comes tomorrow and does everything right, they might not see which way he went," Nolen said.
