Master trainer Bart Cummings will try to win his 14th Australian Cup at Flemington on Saturday with two runners in German import Illo and second string Precedence.

Sydney-based Cummings, 84, wasn't at Flemington on Tuesday when they went through their paces solo on the course proper in preparation for the $1 million 2000m weight-for-age feature.

Ridden by Cummings' long-time track rider Joe Agresta, Precedence worked first over 1800m, quickening over the last 600m and timed to run his last 400m in 23.83 seconds.

Illo, also with Agresta aboard, was the more impressive of the two working over the same distance, quickening from the 600m and running his last 400m in 23.54s.

The Cummings stable has engaged Kerrin McEvoy for Illo while Michael Rodd will be aboard Precedence.

Cummings won the first of his 13 Australian Cups with Arctic Coast in 1968 and the latest with Sirmione forty years later in 2008.

The Neville Parnham-trained Playing God worked alone on the course proper over 1400m, sprinting home the final 400m in 23.94s.

Playing God, a dual Group One winner of the Kingston Town Classic (1800m) at Ascot, finished third to Shocking in last year's Australian Cup while Precedence was fifth.

The Cummings pair have both come though the CF Orr Stakes (1400m) and the Peter Young Stakes (1800m), both at Caulfield, with Illo the better placed in each finishing fourth to Black Caviar and second to Lucas Cranach while Precedence was eighth and seventh respectively.

Illo, an $8 fourth pick with TAB Sportsbet, is clearly the more fancied of the Cummings pair with Precedence at $26.

Playing God, third in the Orr and fourth to King Mufhasa in the Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield, will again be ridden by Steven Parnham and is at $21.

Last-start Sandown Classic (2400m) winner Americain, making his debut for David Hayes, is $3.40 favourite, only just shading another German import Lucas Cranach at $3.60.

English import Manighar, now with Peter Moody, is at $7.
