Rekindled Interest has confirmed his place as a genuine Victoria Derby prospect with an emphatic win in the Group Two AAMI Vase (2040m) at Moonee Valley.

"He is back on track now," trainer Jim Conlan said after Rekindled Interest finished full of running from just off the pace to score by 2-1/2 lengths pacemaker Lion Tamer and Hollowlea.

Rekindled Interest won his race debut at Bendigo but had been a luckless in his first four runs this campaign including last start in the Caulfield Guineas when he stumbled at the start and flashed home to finish fifth.

"I was going to run him a week after the Guineas (in the Norman Robinson) but then we got the rain and he probably wasn't getting right back to where he was," Conlan said.

He said it wasn't until this week that the three-year-old turned the corner.

"I galloped him on Tuesday and he has just really blossomed," Conlan said.

"Yesterday was as good as he ever felt, just beautiful, and that is the best he has looked today."

Conlan said he was confident Rekindled Interest would run out a strong 2500 metres.

"When he ran in the Guineas he was 453kg and came home 450kg and today he was he was 456kg," Conlan said.

"It is drink of water but it indicates that he is really holding up.

"The way he hit the line is probably an indication he will run the 2500 metres.

"He is out of mare which produced a 3600-metre winner and Redoute's Choice can get a Derby and an Oaks winner."

In June, Conlan took over from Rodney Douglas as the head trainer for owner Jonathan Munz and he has 45 horses in work.

Conlan's association with Munz goes back many years and the best horses he trained for him include Danestorm and Above Deck.

"Just to get a horse like this with Jonathan supporting me the way he has is outstanding," Conlan said.

Jockey Hugh Bowman said Lion Tamer ran a terrific race.

"I didn't expect to be in front but he was going to over-race," Bowman said.

"The winner was just too good."

Co-trainer Bjorn Baker said Lion Tamer was identified a year ago as a Derby horse and Saturday's run only confirmed that opinion.
