Leading Victorian apprentice Jake Noonan remains in Royal Melbourne Hospital's trauma unit suffering severe concussion from a race fall at the weekend.

Noonan, who is the son of Mornington trainer Tony Noonan, is described as being in a stable condition although his body is still traumatised.

Tony Noonan said his son spent most of his time of asleep but he should make a full recovery after scans had shown no brain damage or breaks.

Noonan said that on Monday morning Jake ate and drank for the first time since he was speared head-first in to the turf when Lee Freedman-trained three-year-old, Safe, fell near the 200m mark in Saturday's the Veolia Environmental Services Hcp (1200m).

"Progress has been slow in that he spends most of his time asleep," Noonan said.

"He is woken for two hourly obs and his vital signs are okay."

Noonan estimated Jake had been awake for only 10 minutes in the past two days.

"The doctor says he's had a very heavy concussion and with his body still in trauma mode it is going to take a while for him to come around," Noonan said.

It is the second time Noonan has been concussed in two months after he was dislodged from Lady Pachira, trained by his father, at Sandown races on March 2.

Noonan is currently on loan to leading Melbourne trainer Peter Moody and is equal fourth in the Melbourne jockeys' premiership after posting his 36th winner this season on Rusticated at Flemington.

Tony Noonan said the support from well-wishers had been overwhelming.

"The number of texts, emails and phone calls we have received from all over the world has been absolutely amazing," Noonan said.

"Our family has been really appreciative of the thoughts and prayers everyone has offered."

Noonan was also grateful for the support of Racing Victoria medical staff and the Victorian Jockeys Association.
