Popular jockey Nathan Berry remains in a critical condition in a Singapore hospital.

Berry’s twin-brother Tommy is at his bedside and says Nathan opened his eyes for the first time on Saturday night, which was a great relief for the family.

He is also suffering less seizures, which are a symptom of the virus, The Adelaide Advertiser News service reported late last night.

Tommy said his family was due to meet with Nathan’s doctors for a full briefing today.

He (Tommy) may not return for this coming Saturday’s George Ryder Stakes meeting.

“He did open his eyes on Saturday night, which was exciting for us, and he had a look around,’’ Tommy said. “He’s still critical, but I’m hoping he’ll be a lot better by Thursday or Friday.’’

Berry became ill during trackwork last Tuesday, and was quickly rushed to Singapore hospital with viral encephalitis, which can cause swelling on the brain.
