Lee Freedman's dwindling stocks for next month's Golden Slipper Stakes got a boost when unbeaten colt Common Interest won at Flemington.
The More Than Ready colt emerged as a contender for Australia's premier two-year-old race when he graduated from last month's 4-1/2-length debut win at Bendigo with victory in Saturday's Listed Festival Of Racing Stakes (1000m).
Ridden by Craig Williams, Common Interest coasted off the pace and had the field covered at the 200 metres, running away to win by 1-1/4 lengths from Starspangledbanner with Morfontaine 1-1/2 lengths away third.
Freedman's racing manager Sam Pritchard-Gordon said Common Interest was among three main Golden Slipper hopes for the stable along with stakeswinning fillies Colour and Rock The Moment.
"He has put himself in the picture," Pritchard-Gordon said.
"He travelled in kindly behind them which is the secret to these two-year-old races and a furlong (200m) out I didn't think it was really in doubt.
"He has a bit of class and if he gets through this he might be a Slipper horse but we won't make a decision just yet.
"It is still a few weeks to the Slipper and he may need another run."
Common Interest cost $485,000 at Sydney's Easter Yearling Sale and is a half-brother to Group Three Maribyrnong Plate winner Exceedingly Good being from the stakes-placed Snippets mare Common Smytzer.
He was syndicated by Blue Sky Thoroughbreds and is also raced by Arrowfield Stud and various other partners.
Common Interest's sire More Than Ready is also the sire of Colour who is unbeaten after two starts and last start won the Group Three Breeders' Stakes in Adelaide.
Slade Bloodstock syndication's Rock The Moment won Tasmania's Listed Gold Sovereign and was second in the Magic Millions at Launceston.
