Lightly-raced three-year-old Amaethon is doing his best to catch up to his Golden Slipper-bound young sister Crystal Lily after scoring his second win at Sandown.

The Al Maher gelding lacked the same precociousness of Crystal Lily as a two-year-old but impresses trainer Mathew Ellerton as an emerging galloper who is only going to get better with age.

Ridden by Damien Oliver, Amaethon landed in the first three in Wednesday's Flying Spur At Arrowfield Handicap (1300m) and was too strong in the straight, scoring by a half-length from Charbet with Wakayama three-quarters of a length away third.

Ellerton said he was hesitant about stepping the gelding up to 1300 metres at his third run this campaign as he had a tendency to overrace at previous runs but Oliver got him to settle perfectly.

"Hopefully this bloke can go on," said Ellerton who co-trains the gelding with Simon Zahra.

"He could be a progressive horse.

"He is still a bit raw and will be even better next campaign."

Amaethon has raced seven times and Wednesday's win was his second after scoring first-up this campaign at Ballarat last month.

Bred by David Moodie's Contract Racing Syndicate, Amaethon was passed in as a yearling for $110,000 with a $120,000 reserve, resulting in Moodie syndicating him and retaining a managing interest.

Little did he know that Amaethon's half-sister Crystal Lily, also from the Snippets mare Crystal Snip, would have such an impact this season.

The daughter of Stratum is a Blue Diamond Preview winner and last Saturday was sensational when landing the Listed Chairman's Stakes (1100m) by nearly five lengths a week after finishing a luckless sixth in the Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m).

Initially connections were happy to miss the Golden Slipper with the star filly but now Moodie is looking to pay the $150,000 late entry fee.

Ellerton said he would decide between the Group Three Sweet Embrace Stakes on Saturday week and the Group Two Reisling Slipper Trial a week later for her next run before the Golden Slipper on April 3.

"David (Moodie) wants to see what the Kindergarten (at Warwick Farm) throws up this Saturday and if Solar Charged is dominant he wants to dodge her," Ellerton said.

"She (Crystal Lily) has come through her run last Saturday really well and it is just a matter of whether we run on the 13th or the 20th."

He said she was unlucky in the Blue Diamond when she led into a headwind from the start, was pressured for the lead and was on the rails in the straight where the going was inferior.
