Trainer Tony Parker has a Flemington feature race double in his sights for lightly-raced five-year-old Command Prince this winter.

Geelong-based Parker said the Command Post gelding had benefited from two runs this campaign and was on target for both Saturday's $100,000 Provincial Plate (1600m) and the $200,000 Listed Winter Championship Final (1600m) on July 4.

"They are the two main races we have picked out for him," Parker said.

"He has worked well since his last run and so hopefully he will run well on Saturday."

The winner of six of his 13 starts, Command Prince is a proven wet tracker and last winter strung together five wins in a row at Geelong, Ballarat (twice), Bendigo and Caulfield.

Parker later abandoned plans to run Command Prince in the Group One Emirates Stakes (1600m) at Flemington during Melbourne Cup week, preferring to give him a good spell before another winter campaign.

"He came a long way in a short time last campaign," Parker said.

"We tried to freshen him up for the Emirates but he wasn't putting on weight so we gave him a good break instead."

First-up last month Command Prince finished fourth to subsequent Wangoom Handicap winner Arch Symbol at Hamilton and Parker was encouraged by his last start when beaten only two lengths when finishing sixth to Jungle Ruler in the Hussonet Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield.

"He was a bit unlucky last start as he was trapped out four wide all the way," Parker said.

"The 1600 metres will suit him a bit better this time."

TAB Sportsbet agrees, opening Command Prince at $4 on Thursday ahead of the Robert Smerdon-trained Disco Dan ($5.50) and $7 chances Starkron and The Fonz.

Parker said any rain in the lead-up to Saturday would be welcome for Command Prince who is unbeaten in two starts on heavy ground and who has two wins and three placings from six runs on dead and slow tracks.

The forecast was for showers on Thursday and an occasional shower on Friday.

"He just needs a dead track," Parker said. "He doesn't need it too wet."

Parker is relying on Command Prince qualifying for the Winter Championship Final through a 1600-metre heat of the series at Ballarat on June 25.

"I don't want to back him up too much," Parker said.

"He goes well with three or so weeks break between runs so hopefully he can win or run second at Ballarat so he can get into the Winter Championship final."
