Gold Coast jockey Glen Colless will be free to ride at Doomben on Saturday after becoming the first Queensland rider to be suspended for contravening the controversial new whip rules.

Queensland Racing Ltd stewards suspended Colless for four meetings in a telephone hook-up on Sunday after he pleaded guilty to exceeding the allowable number of strikes on Save A Buck at Doomben last Saturday.

Colless struck the gelding for nine consecutive strides when he was beaten a long head by Secrets Untold in the Men of League Handicap (1615m).

Colless thought he had got away with his indiscretion when stewards cleared him to leave the course after the final race on Saturday.

However, stewards later contacted him on his way home to the Gold Coast and advised him he would need to attend an inquiry.

The matter was heard via a telephone hook-up on Sunday in which Colless pleaded guilty to a charge of contravening the new whip rule.

He was suspended for four meetings, with the ban to end on Friday, and forfeited his riding fee and percentage of prizemoney.
