Underrated three-year-old Cavalaire Bay can show his worth at Moonee Valley on Saturday when he faces his first Group Two test in the Alister Clark Stakes.

The Red Ransom colt, who is out of the 2004 Group Two Swettenham Stakes winner French Bid, steps up to 1600m for the first time.

Last start he was 3-1/4 lengths second to the talented Fair Trade in the Group Three CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) at Flemington late last month.

"We've underestimated this horse. He had a stress fracture in his shoulder last year so we turned him out and gave him a good spell," trainer Lee Freedman's racing manager Sam Pritchard-Gordon said.

After more than eight months off the scene, the colt has improved with each of his four runs back and won third-up over 1300m at Sandown on January 24 beating subsequent Sandown winner Aqaleem followed by his CS Hayes effort when he finished ahead of Clark rivals Excelltastic, the unlucky Keano, Stokehouse and Wookah.

"He's in form, he's very fit and he ran a terrific race when it took a very good horse to beat him at Flemington," Freedman said.

"The 1600 metres might be his outer limit, but he's so honest and he's a Valley winner so we'll give him his chance."

The Danny O'Brien-trained Keano is $2.60 favourite for the Alister Clark ahead of Eagle Falls at $4.60, Arondight ($7.50), Cavalaire Bay ($8) with Stokehouse next at $11.
