Essaouira fell out of Golden Slipper favour when she baffled trainer Lee Freedman and jockey Dwayne Dunn when she bucked soon after the start and lost all chance in the Chairman's Stakes at Caulfield.

The filly, sent out $1.55 favourite on Saturday, finished a disappointing sixth to Headway.

Essaouira started at the very short quote in the Listed 1100m race following her impressive six-length debut win over 1000m at Moonee Valley on February 6.

The Exceed And Excel filly jumped brilliantly from barrier five and had her head in front before she starting bucking.

She fell back through the field, settling second last of the eight runners, and failed to flatter in the run to the line finishing 5-1/4 lengths from the winner.

Freedman said he was in disbelief as he watched Essaouira's antics.

"I thought I'd seen everything. It just goes to show there's no such thing as a certainty," the Hall Of Fame trainer said.

"I don't think I've had a two-year-old do it let alone one that has raced and won.

"She might not do it ever again. She'd never done it before."

Dunn said Essaouira had never put a foot wrong in her education.

Stewards, chaired by Terry Bailey, questioned Freedman and Dunn regarding the filly's racing manners before ordering that she must trial "somewhere" before she is allowed to race again.

"We might take her to Sydney and trial her there and then we'll know where we're at," Freedman said.

Alternatively she could trial in Victoria before she goes to Sydney for the Group Two Reisling Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on March 21 and all going well the $3.5 million Golden Slipper (1200m) at the same track on April 4.

Essaouira was third pick in Golden Slipper betting but is now at $21 in TAB Sportsbet's fixed odds market.

Freedman said fellow trainer David Hayes had had "thousands" of Rory's Jester horses and some of them were prone to bucking.

Essaouira is out of the Rory's Jester mare Alizes who won three races as a two-year-old including the Listed Waltzing Lily Quality at Flemington and the Group Two Magic Night Stakes at Rosehill in 2004.

Trainer Peter Moody said the winner, Charge Forward filly Headway, could back up in the Group Three Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m) at Flemington next Saturday.

"She's a filly who has gone to the races and kept improving," said Moody who won the Group One Blue Diamond Stakes with Reward For Effort a week ago.

An $175,000 Australian Easter Yearling Sale purchase, Headway is raced by Tony Santic's Makybe Racing and Breeding Pty Ltd Syndicate.

"She's a nice bombproof filly with a bit of quality. I talked Tony out of running her in the Blue Diamond so I hope I haven't cost him, but it's nice to win this race today," Moody said.

Ridden by Blue Diamond-winning jockey Luke Nolen, Headway ($14) settled sixth and sprinted home strongly for a 2-1/2 length win over first starter Silkyanna ($15) with Samski ($10) two lengths away third.

The filly, who doesn't like being hit with the whip, has raced three times for two wins and a second.

Nolen described her as a tradesmanlike filly who goes out and does the job.
