Resurrected galloper Casual Pass will try for an unlikely second Group One Yalumba Stakes victory at Caulfield on Saturday after regaining form for new trainer Peter Morgan.

Now an eight-year-old, Casual Pass has had a history of serious injuries which have threatened to end his career from as far back as five years ago but he has kept bouncing back.

The Snippets gelding's career seemed over when he won the 2003 Group One Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) at Flemington for trainer Mat Ellerton.

He suffered a tear to the suspensory ligament at the back of his near-fore knee as well as pulling off a piece of his cannon bone.

The injury was so severe it was thought he would never race again.

But thanks to a successful operation by Dr Jim Vasey of the Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital, Casual Pass was able to return to racing 14 months later.

He has won only two races since, the 2006 Easter Cup and Yalumba Stakes, both over 2000m at Caulfield.

The Whittlesea-based Morgan, who is renowned for bringing back crocks with the aid of his water walking machine, has had Casual Pass for just three starts since he returned from another layoff of just over a year.

In the second of those runs the gelding went down by a long neck when runner-up to Yalumba rival Guillotine in the Group Two Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley on September 13.

"He had an injury behind the knee. You can't pick it but we do know that it was there and we monitor it every day and look after it and treat it so touch wood at this stage everything is well," Morgan said.

"He worked well at Caulfield on Tuesday morning."

Morgan said there was an excuse for Casual Pass when he ran sixth to Cefalu in the JRA Cup (2040m) at Moonee Valley late last month.

"He went a bit hard early which didn't help his chances," he said.

"However he has come though that race pretty good and I'm happy with him.

"If he had won the Feehan (Dato Tan Chin Nam) we were thinking of paying a late entry fee for the Cox Plate but that went out the window.

"If I can get him there on Saturday and he wins then (owner) David Moodie might still pay up (for the Cox Plate)."

Danny Brereton, who Tuesday had a day shaved off an eight-meeting careless riding suspension on appeal for his ride on the Morgan-trained Coalesce at Flemington last Saturday, will again ride Casual Pass on Saturday.

The last eight-year-old to win the Yalumba was Rough Habit in 1994 while the last horse to win the race twice was Lonhro in 2002-03.

Pompeii Ruler, who was runner-up to Casual Pass in the Yalumba two years ago before finishing third in the Cox Plate, is $2.25 favourite with TAB Sportsbet ahead of Guillotine ($4.20), Sirmione and Casual Pass at $6.50 with Largo Lad next best at $12.
