Captain Sonador will follow arch rival Shoot Out to Melbourne for the spring if he can maintain his current form in the Group One Rosehill Guineas on Saturday.

Trainer Roger Milne has ruled out returning Captain Sonador for the Brisbane winter carnival and is keen to tackle the major staying races in Melbourne during the spring.

Captain Sonador has been placed at his only two starts in Sydney finishing third to Monton in the Group Two Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill last month before his third to Shoot Out in the Group One Randwick Guineas (1600m) on March 13.

Milne is in the same position as Shoot Out's trainer John Wallace and won't decide until after the Rosehill Guineas whether his colt proceeds to next month's Group One Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick.

Captain Sonador's value as a stallion proposition at stud soared following his Randwick Guineas placing.

Milne is still chasing his first Group One victory and is keen to give Captain Sonador the opportunity while in Sydney to fulfil his ambition before spelling him to prepare for a spring campaign.

"He's a colt and at some point in the future he will stand at stud," Milne said.

"His stud value has increased immensely now that he's Group One placed but it will skyrocket even more if he can win one."

Captain Sonador's Randwick Guineas placing proved his previous run in the Hobartville Stakes was no fluke.

Milne originally sent Captain Sonador south with the plan to return home for the winter carnival if he didn't measure up.

However, his performances have exceeded all expectations especially against Shoot Out who Milne regards highly.

"We're picking up expenses in Sydney and all is going well," he said.

"There's not much between Captain Sonador and Shoot Out.

"Each time they've met in the Magic Millions Trophy, Hobartville and now in the Randwick Guineas, there's been only about a length between them at the finish."

Milne said owner Greg Wagner knocked back offers from Singapore and Hong Kong for Captain Sonador as a two-year-old and early three-year-old but none have been made while he's been in Sydney.

"If he wins a Group One he'd be a real stallion proposition but even if he does I'd say he'll still race on for a while yet," he said.

"To me, he's only just starting to come into his own and there would be better things on offer as a racehorse later on."

Milne has few concerns about Captain Sonador running 2000 metres for the first time.

"I'm sure 2000 metres is going to suit him then I'll decide if he goes on to the Derby or spells which means he won't run during the winter back home," he said.

"I thought Captain Sonador just needed a bit of luck to beat Shoot Out in the Randwick Guineas.

"My horse is better on the outside of horses but he got shunted on to the rail at the 1000 metres.

"A run closed on him at the top of the straight and, had he got through, Captain Sonador could have picked up a length or two and Shoot Out would have been chasing us."
