Shoot Out will proceed to the Group One AJC Australian Derby but the surgeon's knife awaits fellow Queenslander Captain Sonador who will miss the Randwick feature.
A breakfast discussion between trainer John Wallace and owners Graham and Linda Huddy on Tuesday resolved to maintain their preferred course to run Shoot Out in the 2400-metre Derby on Saturday week.
It was a similar story for master trainer Bart Cummings who has decided to target the Derby with Group One Australian Guineas winner Rock Classic following his close second to Zabrasive in the Group One Rosehill Guineas (2000m) last Saturday.
Wallace and Cummings were in two minds whether to stretch their three-year-olds out to the Derby trip or drop back in distance for the Group One Doncaster (1600m) at Randwick on April 17.
Wallace and the Huddys watched Shoot Out do two laps of the sand track at Randwick on Tuesday before making their decision over breakfast to proceed with their original Derby plan.
Shoot Out cast doubt on his ability to stay when only fourth in the Rosehill Guineas.
"It was a hard decision but the more I looked at the video I'm convinced his run last Saturday wasn't that bad," Wallace said.
"He pulled hard and went wide on the corner but the race wasn't run to suit him.
"They walked in front and sprinted home and no-one made up ground from back in the field on the day.
"It was a shifty track as well."
Wallace has also heeded jockey Stathi Katsidis' advice to remove pacifiers for Shoot Out's Derby bid.
"He won the Sires' Produce in Brisbane without the pacifiers and I hope by taking them off he won't pull so hard," Wallace said.
Shoot Out will be spelled after the Derby before being prepared for a Melbourne campaign in the spring.
Meanwhile Captain Sonador, who finished sixth in the Rosehill Guineas, will miss the big Melbourne spring races as well as the Derby.
Captain Sonador pulled up battered and bruised following the Rosehill Guineas when beaten less than six lengths.
"He was stripped behind on both legs during the run and Scott (Seamer) said he felt scratchy coming back after the race," trainer Roger Milne said.
"I took him for a trot myself yesterday and then had his legs X-rayed.
"Unfortunately, I now find he broke down as well and has chipped bones in both front knees.
"He'll be operated on as soon as he gets home and then we'll try to bring him back for another campaign."
Milne was looking forward to the Australian Derby and had no doubts about the colt's staying ability.
"I've never doubted he'd stay and we were looking at taking him to Melbourne in the spring for the longer races but that's out now," he said.
"It takes a minimum four months to recover from these type of injuries."
Prior to his Rosehill Guineas failure, Captain Sonador finished third in both the Group One Randwick Guineas (1600m) and Group Two Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill.
