Toowoomba four-year-old Fantastic Blue earned a shot at the Brisbane winter carnival with a record-breaking win at Doomben.

Fantastic Blue, ridden by Scott Galloway, turned the tables on Lake George with a commanding 2-1/2 length win over the Gold Coast gelding in Saturday's Blackwoods Plate (2100m).

Veteran trainer Paul Nolan immediately declared Fantastic Blue as one of the best horses he'd trained after the son of Danehill Dancer smashed the track record of 2:07.36 set by King Latarmiss in October 2006.

Fantastic Blue's time was 2:06.56, shaving eight-tenths of a second off the previous best.

Nolan rated Caloundra and Ipswich Cup winner Paul's Folly as the best horse he'd trained previously before declaring Fantastic Blue as his equal.

"I've trained some good horses over the years including Paul's Folly who was probably my best but this bloke is just as good as him," Nolan said.

"I thought he could win today after I saw him this morning in the yard. He was bucking his brand off."

Nolan had such a high opinion of Fantastic Blue as a three-year-old that he planned a Group One Queensland Derby campaign for him last season.

"I thought he was a Derby horse last year but I gave up because he kept getting bad alleys," Nolan said.

"He's always been a good horse. You can't win races without a good barrier and he's like a good player out of luck."

Despite Fantastic Blue's win, his fifth from 26 starts, Nolan isn't getting carried away and has ruled out a trip to Sydney for the autumn.

"He won't be going to Sydney, I can say that much," Nolan said.

"I've got a lot of things in mind with him.

"If I find he's a little tired tomorrow I'll just put him out for the winter."

Nolan believes the Group Two Brisbane cup (2400m) at Eagle Farm in June could prove the ideal winter target for Fantastic Blue.

"Once they get to this distance and win like that there's no doubt he'll run further and the Brisbane Cup would be a nice race along with the Caloundra and Ipswich Cups," he said.

Fantastic Blue's win reversed his previous result when Lake George proved superior over 1805m at Eagle Farm last month.
