Jockey Danny Brereton remains in intensive care in a Melbourne hospital following spinal surgery.

Brereton, 45, suffered career-threatening injuries in a fall in the McKenzie Stakes at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

Australian Jockeys' Association representative Des O'Keeffe said surgeons found some spinal cord "involvement" which concerned them.

O'Keeffe said the jockey's condition could change daily over the next two to six weeks.

Brereton also suffered severe concussion, a hairline fracture in his neck, a punctured lung and broken ribs after his mount Marquee Player fell at the 450m and rolled on top of him.

He lost consciousness for more than five minutes and lay on the track for 20 minutes while paramedics attended to him, forcing stewards to delay the following race.

Brereton has had a successful career as a heavyweight jockey over three decades.

He was one of the first Australians to be licensed to ride in Hong Kong in the 1980s and has also ridden in Macau, Malaysia and Singapore.

Brereton has ridden six Group One winners including the 1997 Blue Diamond Stakes on Knowledge and the 1997 QTC Sires' Produce Stakes and QTC Classic aboard Al Mansour.

Stewards have adjourned an inquiry into Brereton's fall and fellow jockey Nick Hall being dislodged from his mount Hollowlea.
