Hugh Bowman will decide early this week whether to appeal a careless riding suspension which could cost him the Doomben Cup mount on Metal Bender.

The top Sydney jockey won the Group Two Hollindale Stakes aboard the Chris Waller-trained gelding on Saturday but the victory was tempered by an eight meeting suspension for careless riding aboard Lochiel in the Gold Coast Guineas.

He has until Tuesday to lodge an appeal against the penalty and his manager Bryan Haskins says Bowman is seriously considering his options.

"He's thinking about it, he's got until Tuesday afternoon to do it," Haskins said.

Bowman's suspension is due to begin after he rides at Doomben on Saturday and expire on May 27.

But sandwiched in between is the Doomben Cup (2020m) on May 22 when Metal Bender is set for a rematch with dual Group One winner Road To Rock who was runner-up to him at the Gold Coast.

The pair share favouritism for the Group One at $3.80 apiece with TAB Sportsbet.

While the suspension could thwart Bowman's association with Metal Bender it won't affect his booking for high class mare Ortensia.

Bowman will have his first ride on the Tony Noonan-trained four-year-old in the Group One BTC Cup (1200m) on Saturday before the pair again team up in the Doomben 10,000 (1350m) two weeks later.

A brilliant last start winner of The Galaxy during the Sydney autumn carnival, Ortensia is the $3.80 pre-post favourite for the BTC Cup.

Filly Melito is second pick at $6.50 after just failing to add the All Aged Stakes to her TJ Smith Stakes win when she beat all but glamour mare Hot Danish in the 1400m Randwick sprint on April 24.

Bowman has also picked up the ride on Kiwi mare Shi Kin Fly for John Sargent in the Group Three Chairman's Handicap (2020m) at Doomben on Saturday.

The five-year-old has done the bulk of her racing in New Zealand but wasn't disgraced at her only previous Australian start when fifth to Enzedex Eagle in the Listed NE Manion Cup (2400m) at Rosehill in March last year.

Shi Kin Fly heads to Brisbane in good form having claimed her first black type win in the Listed Breeders Stakes (2000m) last month.

She followed it with a solid fifth to Boundless in the Group Three Hawke's Bay Cup (2200m) before a smart last start third to Ekstreme in the Group Two Travis Stakes (2000m).

The Brisbane winter carnival has traditionally been a happy hunting ground for the New Zealanders with the likes of last year's Queensland Derby winner Court Ruler among the Kiwis to have tasted success there in recent years.
