Trainer Nikki Burke will by guided by the opinion of top jockey Glen Boss when she makes a decision on starting honest sprinter Not A Copy in the Christmas Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday.

Burke wasn't happy when the grey drew out in barrier 17 in the field of 16 plus two emergencies.

Boss will be having his first ride on the seven-year-old in the 1200m Listed feature.

"I'll talk to the jockey and see if he can be a genius," Burke said.

"Drawn out there makes it hard but one thing in my mind is that he runs well from wide gates.

"I'll speak to the jockey and see if he's got confidence from the gate, otherwise I'll scratch him."

A winner of six races and placed in another 17 of his 37 starts for over $200,000 in prizemoney, Not A Copy is also owned by Burke.

He hasn't won since scoring over 1100m at Caulfield in May last year but has been placed in four of his 12 runs since, including an encouraging long head second to Posadas over 1200m at Moonee Valley third-up on November 28.

On that occasion he drew the outside barrier in the 13-horse field and jockey Dwayne Dunn had him running second throughout.

Last start he was a close up fourth to Beltrois down the straight 1200m course at Flemington when ridden by apprentice Nathan Rose.

Trainer Rod Douglas is now favouring running Queensland Derby placegetter Larry's Never Late in the Christmas Stakes after initially preferring to reserve him for the Williamstown Hcp (1400m) at Flemington on New Year's Day.

The four-year-old, who won the Hamilton Cup (2200m) last April, is very good fresh having won three of his four first-up runs.

"I'm looking to take him to Tasmania for the Hobart Cup and if we get a bit of rain he'll run on Saturday," Douglas said.

Larry's Never Late has been freshened-up since running six to Poised To Win over 1600m at Flemington on November 7, a break of seven weeks.

"He always runs well fresh. He won over 1200 and 1000 metres at his first two preparations, although 1200 is not his go now," Douglas said.

"But if there is a bit of give in the track and they happen to go at break neck speed it wouldn't surprise to see him run in the money."

Dean Holland will ride Larry's Never Late, a $13 chance with TAB Sportsbet, who has drawn barrier one.

The Group Three Hobart Cup (2200m) is on February 8.
