When Paul Cave has an up-and-coming stayer working his way up in distance at this time of year, there's really no prizes for guessing where the horse might be headed.

Cave, the winner of six Listed Christmas Cups over the years, is looking towards the 2400m race again with Our Billy Blue who steps up to 2000m for the first time this preparation at Rosehill on Saturday.

Our Billy Blue is the pre-post favourite for the Vincents Forensic Accounting Handicap on the back of a last-start second to Altier over 1800m at Rosehill last Saturday.

"He pulled up well from last week's run and he worked nicely on Thursday morning," Cave said.

"We are looking towards the Christmas Cup with him. I have won it six times but that's not the reason, it's more the timing of it.

"We wanted to give him a decent spell (after his preparation earlier in the year) and there was no point hammering him this spring because he's still maturing, more mentally than anything."

Cave expects Saturday's performance to be the lightly-raced gelding's best so far this campaign.

"He will appreciate the extra 200 metres from last week stepping up to the 2000 metres," the trainer said.

The Listed Christmas Cup is to be run at Rosehill on December 11 with the Group Three Summer Cup over 2400m on Boxing Day at Randwick also being considered for Our Billy Blue.

The gelding has had three starts so far this time in, gradually stepping up in ground from 1400m to 1600m and then 1800m.

"Once he gets over ground I think he'll be suited," Cave said.

By sire of the moment High Chaparral, Our Billy Blue was purchased at Karaka as a yearling in 2008 for $140,000.

Dual Cox Plate winner So You Think went through the same sale and caught the eye of Cave who was there with the intention of returning with a couple of horses by the sire.

"My client John Watters said to me when the horses came out for the New Zealand sale that year, `Mark my words, this horse (High Chaparral) is the next Zabeel'," Cave said.

"He's a very good student of breeding and he's got a good racing head."

While So You Think caught his eye, Cave and his long-time client returned home with two other sons by the sire, including Our Billy Blue.

"I'm happy with this horse," Cave said.

And he believes the gelding is good enough to make his presence felt in staying races this summer.

"But I'm sure he'll be a better horse again next time in," he added.
