It's a quantum leap from a provincial maiden win to Group One glory but trainer Guy Walter has high hopes for Surfer Rosa in the Vinery Stud Stakes.

If she handles the 2000 metres on Saturday as well her trainer thinks she can, Surfer Rosa will then head to the AJC Australian Oaks.

Part of Walter's optimism stems from the filly's breeding which suggests she should be well above average.

By last season's champion sire Encosta De Lago, Surfer Rosa is a daughter of Quiz Queen, a half-sister to Champagne.

The Vinery Stud will be run exactly 11 years since Champagne won the corresponding race at Rosehill.

Champagne didn't win another Group One but ran second in three that year - the AJC Australian Oaks (2400m) to On Air, the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) to Might And Power and the Melbourne Cup (3200m) won by Jezabeel.

"The wet track is obviously a worry because we don't know how she will handle it," Walter said.

"It is a big rise in class but it was a nice win last start and this race is against her own age and sex."

Surfer Rosa won a 1600-metre maiden at Kembla Grange on March 22, the same day Saturday's rival Allez Wonder took out the Keith Nolan Classic over the same distance.

Getting horses to Classic races via restricted events is a method Walter used successfully with Oaks winners Wild Iris and Republic Lass and almost pulled off with Braeloch, a long head second to Starcraft in the 2004 AJC Australian Derby.

Before the Derby Braeloch ran a close fifth to Starcraft in the Group Two Tulloch Stakes which is the assignment for Surfer Rosa's stablemate Willy Jimmy.

"He won a mile race at Gosford two starts back and came from a hopeless position," Walter said.

"He is a very relaxed type and he is heading to the Derby."

Willy Jimmy was at $18 on Friday with Predatory Pricer the $2.40 Tulloch Stakes favourite while Surfer Rosa was at $41 with Gallica dominating the Vinery Stud at $2.90.

Sydney Cup hopeful Twin Wing who runs in the Neville Sellwood Stakes and sprinter Fighting Fund who is in the Schweppervesence are given more of a chance.

Twin Wing was at $8 with Fighting Fund at $6.50.

"Fighting Fund likes it wet and he likes to be fresh," Walter said.

"Missing the Newmarket means he is certainly fresh."

Fighting Fund broke through the barriers when upset by the runner in the stall next to him before the Newmarket at Flemington on March 7.

He was ordered back to the trials and has pleased Walter with his progress since his third in an 815-metre heat at Warwick Farm on March 20.
